Cheese Poet Laureate

Cheese Poet Laureate of Ingersoll: Shirley Lovell

Shirley Lovell was declared the Cheese Poet Laureate of Ingersoll, Ontario, in 1997, the first year of the James McIntyre Poetry Contest. The Cheese Poet Laureate title combines two traditions: that of the UK's Poet Laureate, the poet appointed to compose poetry for state occasions, with Ingersoll's unique tradition of poetry on dairy themes, originated by James McIntyre. As Ingersoll's Cheese Poet Laureate, Shirley has written poems for occasions, times, and seasons such as Remembrance Day, Christmas, the millennium, and the coming of spring, as well as many poems about milk, cheese, and cows.

Shirley Lovell is uncommonly qualified to be Cheese Poet Laureate of Ingersoll. Not only is she a Witty Poet, she is a life-long resident of the area and an accomplished cheesemaker, she was also the Curator of the Ingersoll Cheese Factory Museum from 1988 to 2004. This former teacher and proud grandmother is active in her church and church choir. Her love of history has been expressed not only in her award-winning museum work, but also in her involvement in the Ingersoll and District Historical Society and the raising of her beloved Canadian horses.
