Place names of historic rural communities in Oxford County, Ontario, Canada
Database created by D. Rozell (Records Management Coordinator, County of Oxford)
and B. Yeung
Doug Rozell's comments: "I used maps from 1975 and 1908 that indicated place names. The W.A. Baker (Springbank Consulting Engineers)
map of 1975 states that many of the place names are of an historic nature; in many cases all that is left is the church or community hall
eg Rosanna, Chesterfield. Many of the County planning and public works case files name them as well. In Upper Ratho (three houses) there
is actually a sign on someone's lawn, "Welcome to Upper Ratho"; one of the houses used to be the hotel, the place being a train stop
serving Ratho. In Banner there is a boulder at the corner with an inscription memorializing a post mistress of the hamlet. Many of the
places still exist as rural clusters or actual serviced villages (Braemar, Drumbo). In short, I just collected place names for which there
is some warrant. The title "historic hamlets" is selected for the alliteration, while in fact the places run all the way from serviced
village to hamlet to rural cluster to ghost."
