Oxford County Library wins award for partnership with Oxford Review

Saturday in Sudbury, Oxford County Library was awarded one of the first ever "CAPPER" awards as a result of the partnership between the library and the Oxford Review for the weekly "Lost in Cyberspace" articles.

The award was given at the first annual Ontario Public Internet Access Conference this weekend, which brought together 300 representatives of "CAP" sites from across Ontario to "re-energize, share best practices and network. Share information and resources on funding, leadership and organizational development, human resources, marketing and promotion, and Community Access Program (CAP) administration" (http://www.accessola.com/piaconference/).

"CAP" is Industry Canada's "Community Access Program "to provide Canadians with affordable public access to the Internet and the skills they need to use it effectively" (http://cap.ic.gc.ca/). Industry Canada has contributed to the development of over 9,000 CAP sites across Canada since 1996. Oxford County Library has been involved with CAP since 1996 when John Manley, then Minister of Industry, opened the Otterville CAP site. All public libraries in Oxford County are now CAP sites and there is a CAP site at St. Mary's High School in Woodstock.

The "Lost in Cyberspace" articles began in the summer of 1999 as a promotional activity undertaken by CAP summer youth. Every summer since 1996, Oxford County Library has been fortunate to provide meaningful work opportunities through the summer under the CAP Youth Employment Program (YEP). CAP YEP is coordinated by Industry Canada and is funded through Human Resources Development Canada's Youth Employment Strategy. CAP YEP "aims to provide employment opportunities for young Canadians between the ages of 15 and 30-primarily students, recent graduates, or the under-employed or unemployed".

"Lost in Cyberspace" has become a regular feature of the Oxford Review and many people look forward to the insights it provides on cyberspace from an Oxford County perspective.

The CAPPER Awards have been developed as a means of recognizing organizations in Ontario for achievement of the CAP objectives. Oxford County Library values the acknowledgement this award represents of the its efforts to achieve the library's mission of "Quality library service for the individual spirit, community support and access to information".
